Murdered woman’s nephew jailed for punching policeman

The nephew of a murdered woman whose body was found floating in water has been jailed for ten days for punching a police officer.Devario Whitter, 24, admitted the offence and said he was drinking at the time and upset over the death of his aunt, Denise Evans.Ms Evans was murdered, and her body found floating in the water off Mill Point Road, in Pembroke, on April 29.Yesterday Magistrates’ Court heard that police stopped Whitter on Ewing Street on May 12 as part of a random search.After one of the arresting officers initiated a radio check to see if Whitter had any outstanding warrants, the father-of-two struck him in the chest and ran.Whitter shed clothing as officers tried to grab hold of him. He escaped by jumping a high wall and running behind some houses.He admitted the offence after his arrest on Tuesday.Whitter told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “I was not in a right state of mind.”He added: “He (the police officer) says I punched him in the chest. I talked to him yesterday and he knows it was an honest mistake. I apologise for wasting the court’s time.”Mr Warner sentenced him to ten days’ imprisonment.
