Steinhoff hangs on in exciting finish
14-year-old boys title in the National Junior Duathlon Championships at Clearwater Beach on Sunday.
In the run-cycle-run event, Steinhoff trailed Morrison after the first two kilometre run, but fought back to take a substantial lead with a fast 10 kilometre bike ride.
Morrison made ground on the leader during the second run, but Steinhoff, who finished in a time of 33 minutes, five seconds, held off his rival by seven seconds.
Nick Taylor finished third in 34:35 and Chris Conway fourth.
Another outstanding junior performance came from 11-year-old Flora Duffy, who got the better of older girls to win the 11-14 category in a time of 39:07.
Duffy's closest challenger was the winner of the 14-year-old title Ashley Robinson Roberts, who was clocked at 40:09.
Chloe Kempe's excellent running earned her the 12-year-old title and third place overall, while Melissa DeSilva pipped friend Ashley Kirkpatrick to finish as top 13-year-old.
Adam Petty added another notch to his belt with the boys 12-year-old title, which he won by a three-minute margin to finish sixth overall in the 11-14 category.
Geoffrey Smith edged out Petty to take fifth place and the 11-year-old title, ahead of Tyler Abbott and Coyatito Smith. But 11-year-old Chayce Smith, who was expected to be among the honours, arrived late and missed the start.
In the younger age groups, Oliver Kempe was a convincing winner in the 10-year-olds while Tim Fox held off Geoffrey Burns to win the eight-year-olds.
And Raishun Burch outsprinted Thomas Godfrey in a close finish to win the nine-year-olds title.
Ashley Fox, Laura Ruse, Amy Fox and Lianna Lambert took the honours in the girls younger age groups.
