Kelly Williams, owner of Kitchen Works, has a beautiful kitchen in her Hamilton home with all sorts of clever designs for creating storage and "special effects.'' She has spent 23 years working in the field of interior design in one capacity or another.

"The kitchen is my favourite room to design. I enjoy working with the spaces and options. The kitchen often coordinates with the adjacent rooms. She finds that her work as a kitchen specialist means each day is different, each client is different and each set of requirements is varied, depending on the project scope.

"I strive for each project to be one that the client is happy with forever. I enjoy the challenge of creating a functional, pleasing environment,'' she said.

When ask about the key elements of being a successful designer she put education at the top of the list with hands on experience.

Mrs. Williams attended Oregon State University and studied home economics, is an associate of the American Society of Interior Design and a member of The National Kitchen and Bath Association.

"Organisation is also an important element.

"Communication skills are essential in determining the real needs of a client and the key to successful installation. Presentation is also a factor in communication.

"Vision is crucial to the designer to visualise the finished details through to completion,'' she advised.
