Hundreds compete in first Relay Classic

Many of Bermuda's future track and field stars were in the spotlight last Friday evening the National Sports Centre. Over 320 junior athletes competed in the first Schools' Relay Classic hosted by the Bermuda Pacers Track Club. The event consisted of two relay events ¿ the 4 x100 and 4 x 400 metre relays. In total 18 Primary schools, six Middle schools, and three Senior high schools competed for bragging rights, school pride and over $4,000.00 worth of funding for their PE Departments.

In the first two sets of 4 x100 metre heats involving the Primary school girls division, Somerset Primary, West Pembroke, Port Royal, Paget, West End, Northlands, Elliot and Prospect all qualified for the finals. During the Primary boys heats, West Pembroke again were the top qualifier followed by Paget, Harrington Sound, Victor Scott, Somerset Primary, West End, Elliot and St. David's Primary school.

During the 4 x 400 metre finals, West Pembroke was first in the Primary girls' event in a time of 5:06. 43, Port Royal was second in 5:20.78, and Elliott was third in 5:27. 68.

In the Primary school boy's event, Paget Primary was first in 5.00.73, West Pembroke was second in 5.06.73, and Somerset Primary was third in 5.16.73.

In the Middle school finals, Warwick Academy won the girls race in 4.39.54, Sandys was second in 4.41.45 and Whitney Institute was third in 4.41.74.

In the boys' finals, Sandys was first in 4.04.91, Whitney was second in 4.06.73 and Clearwaters was third in 4.18.97.

In the boys and girls high school finals, CedarBridge's boys were first in 3.53.89 followed by Berkeley in 3.54.71. Warwick Academy won the girls division in 4.21.97.

The final events of the evening were filled with excitement as the top eight schools battled to be crowned the relay champions.

In the Primary school girls event, West Pembroke stayed true to form as they won the 4 x 100 metres in a time of 1.02.05. Somerset Primary was second in 1.02.22 and Port Royal was third in 1.04.17.

In the boys' finals West Pembroke matched their girls' achievements by winning the 4 x100 in 57.44. Paget was second in 58.40 and Harrington Sound third in 1.00.10.

In the Middle school finals, T. N. Tatem captured the girls' title in 54.19, Sandys was second in 55.65 and Warwick Academy was third in 56.15.

In the boy's finals, Saltus Grammar shocked the field as they won the event in 48.52, Sandys was second in 49.36 and T. N. Tatem was third in 49.75.

In the Senior Secondary School final, Warwick Academy girls were first in 52.80 followed by Berkeley Institute in 53.52. In the senior boys' division, CedarBridge was first in 46.35, Berkeley Institute (B) was second in 47.76 and Berkeley Institute (A) was third in 48.63.

The overall top 5 finisher were:
