Coach Thompson walks out on BFA

Bermuda Football Association Director of Youth Development Kenny Thompson has officially resigned from his post.

Thompson, a former Bermuda, Somerset Eagles, Somerset Trojans and North Village midfielder, is understood to have tendered his resignation two weeks? ago ? severing ties with local football?s governing body three months before the end of a three-year contract with the Association.

Thompson was appointed as national coach in an interim capacity in the fall of 2003 after his predecessor Gary Darrell relinquished the reins.

The outgoing BFA executive declined to speak to the yesterday, as did his colleagues at the Association.

However, according to reliable sources, he is set to finish up at the BFA on Friday.

After coaching Bermuda during last year?s World Cup qualifying tournament in which the team crushed Montserrat before losing narrowly to El Salvador over two legs, Thompson was replaced by former Coventry City striker Kyle Lightbourne.

Thompson also enjoyed a successful coaching stint at North Village and was at the helm of Bermuda?s Under-17 and Under-20 national youth teams.

He previously taught physical education at CedarBridge Academy for five years before taking up his post at the BFA in 2002.

The son of late Eagles goalkeeper and Somerset Cricket Club Cup Match player, Kenneth (Mickey) Thompson, he earned widespread acclaim as a top local player in his own right, winning Premier Division, Martonmere Cup, Dudley Eve Trophy and Friendship Trophy championships at Trojans before heading back to his roots at Eagles where he helped the White Hill club gain promotion to top flight football for the first time ever in 1985.

In 1996 Thompson received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education at Howard University, the same year he obtained a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) B Licence.

He then received a USSF A Licence in 2001 and successfully completed the equivalent to the UEFA B Licence course in Holland and the first part of UEFA?s A Licence course in the UK in 2003.

Over the years Thompson has taken several local youth squads to Ajax in Holland to compete in the Holland Cup tournament.

He has also attended numerous football symposiums, FIFA courses and conventions in Trinidad, Holland, US, France and the UK.

He coached briefly at Eagles before moving on to Village and has had experience coaching overseas in the US.

It remained unclear at press time last night whether or not anyone else was in line for Thompson?s soon-to-be-vacant position.
