A convicted drink-driver whose passenger was injured in a crash remains behind bars today despite being granted bail.

John Wardman was jailed for six months last week for causing a crash that seriously injured his friend, Alex Doyle.

Then on Monday the 29-year-old was granted bail by Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons pending an appeal against his conviction.

His father, George Wardman, told The Royal Gazette: “John was granted bail on Monday but he is still incarcerated in Westgate because we have not had time to organise anything and we are determining what the next move is.

“This is a very difficult time for the family.”

In July John Wardman of Paget was convicted by a jury of causing a crash that seriously injured Mr Doyle while driving over the legal alcohol limit, drink-driving and failing to provide Mr Doyle with the necessaries of life.

The accident took place close to the junction of Harbour and Manse Road in Paget on December 27, 2010.

After he was found guilty his defence team immediately lodged an appeal against the conviction.

While prosecutors have also launched their own appeal against the six-month sentence handed down to Wardman on the basis it was ‘manifestly inadequate’.

Both appeals will be heard by the Court of Appeal at a later date.

In the meantime Wardman remains in custody at Westgate.
