the pool competition at fourth Regional Masters Championships in Mexico on Wednesday.

And including an earlier river swim, Bermuda's medal count climbed to eight -- including four gold medals -- during competition at the Oaxtepec Sports and Recreational Complex, 60 kilometres south of Mexico City.

Kevin Insley, competing in the men's 30-34 age group, led the way by winning the 200-metre individual medley and 200m breaststroke. Chris Smith, competing in the 65-69 category, added to the haul by finishing second in the 200m IM.

A total of seven Bermudians have joined some 1,200 Latin American and Caribbean swimmers for the championships. Several competitors are capable of beating world records and all event records are up for grabs, including two set by Bermudians in Barbados in 1995.

Insley and Sara Mancell each won their age groups in a 1,000-metre river swim.

Competitors had to swim up the Rio Y Albercas, a fast-flowing jungle river.

The actual distance each swimmer swam would have been between 1,300 and 1,800 metres depending on their speed.

Mancell won the women's 19-24 age group while Claire Mancell placed second and Zoe Hanson third. Duncan Newby was fifth in men's 45-49 and Margaret Marshall third in the women's 50-54.
