<Bz38>Malachi gets advice from the very best
Teenager Malachi Jones might have to wait to make World Cup history.
The Southampton Rangers 17-year-old is poised to become the third youngest player ever to take part in the tournament but had to be satisfied with the 12th man role against Sri Lanka on Thursday, and there’s no guarantee he’ll get the nod from coach Gus Logie for Monay’s clash against India.
But in the meantime, he’s having the time of his life, rubbing shoulders and even getting advice from some of the best players in the world.
Among those who have taken time out to help the youngster are Indian star Sachin Tendulkar and Australian captain Ricky Ponting.
“I am really very happy to be involved in this World Cup and I have got some tips from two of the greatest players in the world in Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar,” Jones told the Trinidad Guardian.
“I spoke to Ricky when we were in St. Vincent and he told me to grab the opportunity with both hands and make the best use of the opportunities presented to me.
“I also met up with Sachin on my way here and he told me to work hard and always keep focused on my game and it will pay off.”
Meanwhile, former Bermuda coach Mark Harper who is working in Trinidad as a TV commentator, said he was delighted Jones had been included in the Island squad, having picked him out as a 14-year-old with enormous potential during his time working for Bermuda Cricket Board.
“I always thought young Malachi had what it takes to play at this level,” said Harper. “This has got to be a great experience for him.”
