Schoolchildren made up packages of food and gifts to help others in the run-up to Christmas.

Saltus Grammar School pupils created the gift packages, which were donated to charities.

A spokeswoman explained: “Each student contributed one non-perishable item for their classroom box.

“Parents or students could provide more if they wanted.

“The goal was to provide the charity chosen – Eliza DoLittle Society – with 21 food boxes.”

Carol Jack, a literacy programme assistant, and Kathy Pacheco, an administrative assistant in the upper primary department, spearheaded the food drive.

The generosity of pupils and their families meant that the school handed over 27 “very full” packages.

Year 6 pupils chose to deliver an extra “act of kindness” to help other people “feel special during the holidays”.

They decided to make care packages to donate to Meals on Wheels.

The spokeswoman said: “The students put a lot of thought into what should go into these boxes.

“They made a card, an ornament and then, with the generosity of their parents, donations of socks, activity books, pens, packaged cookies and candy, travel size soaps and lotions, notepads and so much more, were added.”

Rosie Doughty, a Year 5 teacher, organised upper primary school staff donations of toiletries to Teen Haven and the Loads of Love outreach project run by Christ Church, in Warwick.

Middle and senior school pupils also donated to the Eliza DoLittle Society earlier this term and some students gave cards to accompany the Meals on Wheels deliveries.

The spokeswoman said: “Thank you to everyone who contributed to these donations.

“Everyone deserves to be happy and we hope that the day they receive their special gift is that much brighter.”
