Teacher had a ‘witty sense of humour and a gentle spirit’

Myra Robertson –Armstrong AllenFebruary 26, 1928-–December 7, 2011Myra Robertson Armstrong Allen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 in Smithers, British Columbia, at the age of 83.Myra was born on February 26, 1928 in Ecclefechan, Scotland where her parents Walter and Mary Armstrong ran the village post office.After completing teachers college, she taught school in Gretna Green, Scotland. In 1955 her independent and adventurous spirit led her to accept a teaching position in Bermuda at Cavendish Hall School.She taught at Cavendish until 1972 when the school was merged with Saltus Grammar School, where she taught year seven students until her retirement.She was the prime mover behind the school’s garden club, a lifelong passion. She was also a dedicated and wonderful Godmother to a happy host of Bermudian children.During her time in Bermuda, she was a long-time member and supporter of the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society, the Committee of 25, the Bermuda National Trust and Christ Church, Warwick.In 1988, Myra retired from teaching and married retired Canadian naval officer Don Allen. Myra moved to Westbank, BC with Don where they ran a small vineyard.Together they enjoyed travelling, winemaking and Scottish Country dancing. Myra suffered a stroke in 1995 but continued to lead an active life.Don passed away in 1998 and Myra moved to Smithers to be closer to her grandchildren.Myra always will be remembered for her gentle spirit and dry, witty sense of humour. She was a remarkably intelligent woman, who loved art history, reading and gardening.She is survived by her stepdaughters Linda (Kelly) Jones of Smithers, BC and Cathy Hardie of Kamloops, BC, grandchildren Ariel and Riley Jones and Amanda Hardie.Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Blanche and Edna Armstrong; nieces Hazel, Mary, Sheanah, Alison, Nicola and nephew David in England and Scotland.Myra was predeceased by her husband, Don Allen; brothers, John and William Armstrong; sister, Jean Burgess; nephew Graham Burgess and dear friend, Joyce Zuill.At Myra’s request, there will be no funeral service. A private family interment will be held at a later date.In lieu of flowers, Bermuda residents may make donations in Myra’s memory to the scholarship fund of the Garden Club of Bermuda.
