Marching Rockettes hope old members roll up for the Heritage Day Parade

THE Dynamic City Rockettes are looking to reunite past and present members at this year's Heritage Day Parade for what they hope will be their greatest performance yet.

Known across the island for its unique marching style, the majorette group has had more than 100 members since it was created in 1983. And founding members Carla Smith, Donna Douglas and Rosina Hardtman are hoping they will all turn out to perform as the group marks its 30th anniversary this year.

"It began with the three of us," Mrs. Smith explained. "We'd been members of another group which finished and said, 'Why should we let it stop there?' We started off in a small garage at (Queen's Certificate recipient) Joy Wilson Tucker's house. Our first performance was in 1984. We began with ten members and grew to become the most popular majorette group."

The Dynamic City Rockettes stood out, Mrs. Smith said, because their routine was so different from the other groups on the island.

"We were well known because we didn't do the normal march. We actually do it on our toes," she said. "Everyone looks forward to our unique dance. We're also different because we don't spin our batons like the others, we twirl them, although we haven't moved on to fire yet.

"I also believe we were one of the first groups to perform to music. We were really popular. We did all the parades, we did weddings, we were everywhere."

The group ranged in age from as small as four, to 34 and swelled in size from the original three founders to - in one year - as many as 86 performing members, she said.

"We actually have a few generations of families who have participated. We're still active now. We have about 21 members. But what we're trying to do is to get some of the old members back. We have 128 members that we know how to contact but there are others who are missing.

"We'd like to reach everybody. Even if they don't want to participate, we'd like them to get in contact with us so we can network and learn more about what's happening in their lives. But our hope is that they're all willing to perform in this year's Heritage Day Parade."
