Goal drought worries St. George's

weeks when they face arch-rivals St. George's in the Friendship Trophy tonight at Devonshire Rec. at 9 p.m.

The east enders, better known for their cricketing exploits, have proven a thorn in the side of their footballing counterparts, having evenly split their last four outings dating back to the 1992-93 season.

However, the lastest encounter -- November 21 -- saw St. George's squeak by 1-0 at Wellington Oval on a Melvin Simmons strike after the visitors had dominated most of the proceedings.

In the weeks leading up to the Christmas break each side took divergent paths, with Somerset drifting perilously downward, while St. George's rose to a place near the upper-echelon of the First Division.

Greg Foggo, Sr., finally appears to have his men believing in themselves -- that they can compete with the best in the Island -- and skipper, centre-back Neil Paynter, is like an extension of the coach on the field, constantly exhorting his troops on.

However, one problem neither have been able to solve is that of finding the back of the net...less than half a goal per game will not get any team very far.

Several combinations have been used up front, but so far none have worked and been able to reverse the trend. Only a stout defence and good goalkeeping by Troy Hall have kept them afloat.

Aside from seeking revenge for the earlier loss, reigning league champions Somerset will want to assure themselves a positive start to the New Year after a sub-par first half.

Several chinks have been identified in their armour and they have fumbled around in search of plugs for these holes.

Forward Rodney Bascome has not been able to duplicate the form of seasons past despite leading the team in scoring and youngster Lamaul Crofton has emerged as the danger-man up front.

Hard-working Andrew Rahman has fortified an injury-riddled midfield, but the defence has been porous and a definite weak link.

As can be inferred, little separates these two outfits and the match would rate as a toss-up.

Meanwhile, tonight's curtain-raiser at 7 p.m. has Devonshire Cougars installed as firm favourites to oust Social Club during their Second Division Shield encounter.

Cougars enter the match as the Island's only unbeaten club among the various senior divisions.

STANDING TALL -- Steady goalkeeping from Troy Hall, centre, and a stout defence have kept St. George's afloat. The east enders face Somerset tonight.
