Somerset, student make the grade

Somerset defeated North Village 4-2 last night, earning them the right to raise above their heads the gleaming Futuro Cup, but the real players were the student administrators, referees, physios and coaches, who ensured a smooth running contest.

A crowd of over 1,000 spectators witnessed as two goals each from Somerset forwards Rodney Bascome and Lamaul Crofton foiled Village's chances, although the latter did manage tallies through Kacy Simons and Ricky Hill.

However, rather than being a test for the two teams, it was more of a practical critique of the organisational prowess of the officials on the sidelines -- all taking part in the Futuro soccer course -- who, armed with notebooks and pens, watched attentively.

FIFA officials Hugo Salcedo, Jochen Figge, George Cummings and Rudy Gittens also viewed their charges and evaluated their conduct among the various disciplines.

"It was a good exercise,'' said Salcedo, the course coordinator hailing from the United States."Not only for the students, but also for the teams.

"We tried to simulate all the things we would see in an international game.

"FIFA has felt that this course is good for any country that wants to participate in order to take a self look into what it is they have. The course will give the BFA an assessment of what it is they need.

"Hopefully this is the beginning. That is to say, `This is what you have and this is what you have to do'.

"There is a lot of enthusiasm here, but they (BFA) need a lot of cooperation from FIFA. They have good players, good people that want to work, but they have not been exposed to many other countries and have been somewhat isolated...they need some more help.''
