Wade sparks Somerset celebration

A last-minute goal by Nasir Wade sparked a huge Somerset celebration as he sent his team to the top of the Premier Division on a wet and wild night in the West End.

Former leaders and defending champions Cougars paid the ultimate price for poor marking as an unmarked Wade took possession at the top of the box and drilled home the winner to cap a fast and furious game which neither side deserved to lose.

Holding a 2-1 advantage at the half, Somerset were pegged back after the break as Cougars had Aljame Zuill's effort ruled offside before the same player made no mistake after 65 minutes, cracking the ball into the roof of the net for the equaliser.

Trojans could have restored their lead when Rodre (Pipe) Wilson and substitute Rohaan Simons both blazed over the bar while Simons was also denied a penalty appeal after crashing down in the box.

Somerset had got off to the best of starts in the first half when they opened their account after just 10 minutes, having taken the game by the scruff of the neck immediately following the kick-off.

Steven Astwood gained possession in midfield and sent the ball left to Wilson who turned his marker inside out before being dragged down in the penalty area. Referee Anthony Mouchette had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Sean Simmons obliged, tucking his effort into the left corner.

Five minutes later Wilson put Astwood clear but the big striker fired wide. However, within another five minutes the West Enders had doubled their lead.

Wilson was left unattended in the box as he pounced on a high, loose ball before rifling through a maze of legs to beat Cougars 'keeper Ricardo Brangman.

Even with the two-goal advantage it was Somerset who continued to apply the pressure, but inexplicably some 10 minutes before the beak they took their foot off the pedal and were made to pay the price.

Zuill broke down the left hand side before cutting in and firing a speculative shot which, helped by the greasy conditions, slithered through 'keeper Timmy Figureido's legs and into the net.

Somerset, however, still had chance to restore their two-goal lead as Gavin Butterfield's intended back pass was intercepted by Lamaul Crofton whose first-time shot produced an outstanding save from Brangman.

Cougars themselves could also have found the net again but Domico Coddington shot wide when well placed.
