Physiotherapist Nathan provides a tonic for club

IN last week’s column, I told you about a new player at the Chess Club. This week is going to be similar. The Chess Club has been going strong with lots of members. One of our members became ill, and to keep him company and active at what he liked best, I took the chess game to him in the hospital.

He is Carlton Williams, one of my best friends and an excellent player.

We used to play in the hospital lobby where he could chat to friends who came to say hello and watch him play.

Now for our new star on the scene — Nathan Wharerimu (pictured)<$> . He has not only helped Carlton with his chess but also with his therapy and that is what he is at the hospital — a physiotherapist.

He arrived in Bermuda some nine months ago along with his wife Emily who is a nurse. Nathan started to come to the Chess Club and play in some of our tournaments. In this particular tournament it was round 3 of the Eric Kemper Memorial. I was facing Nathan for the first time.

In Diagram 1, I had just moved my knight 11. Nc7 to break up Nathan’s already good pawn chain. Now all you chess players out there can you see a sacrifice here? Plus it’s only 11 moves in the game. I did not see a storm about to come.

Now there’s the sacrifice in Diagram 2. And it’s at this stage my game unravels. Diagram 3, he would not even trade with me, because he had checkmate in move 15 in Diagram 4.

There is a new king at King Edward — so, look out.

Thank you Carlton for bringing Nathan to us. And thank you Nathan, I now need some chess therapy.
