Beggar jailed for three months

A 34-year-old homeless man who begged for money outside a supermarket has been jailed for three months.Cannoth Roberts admitted in Magistrates’ Court to trespassing and using threatening words, but told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he had simply been telling the manager of the Somerset MarketPlace to “mind his own business”.The court heard that on May 23 at 5.30pm, the store’s manager told Roberts to leave after being informed that he was asking customers for money.Roberts had already been sent a written notice by registered post which forbade him to trespass on store property.Asked twice to leave by police, Roberts allegedly told the second officer: “Don’t you understand that I will hurt him, that I will cut him?”He was then arrested and taken to Somerset Police Station.Mr Warner sentenced Roberts to three months’ imprisonment for each charge, with the sentences to run concurrently.
