A two year project to erect a Motorsport Park at Southside is finally coming to fruition.

Minister of Sport Dale Butler said last night the park at Southside has taken about two years so far and he has his fingers crossed that it will be up and running in the next six to eight weeks.

A safety assessment of the park was completed this year by an overseas consultancy group that deals with airport security and the park passed with flying colours, said Butler, adding that the park also met international safety standards.

Butler said the next step was to reassure Cabinet that the park would be safe and after they gave it the go ahead, building requirements were then passed by the Planning Department.

He added that a building permit is the next thing to obtain and then planning permission for a pre-fab building to house equipment.

?It should be smooth sailing from now on,? he said.

The park will be for scramblers, go-cart racers, and other racers.

He added that the process to get as far as he has with the park has been very frustrating with all the different steps that need to be dealt with but he is confident that things are moving nicely now.

Three trainee operators have been found and an advertisement for a full time operator will then be published.

The Minister added that he working with local motor sports group to stage a grand opening.
