The 20-year-old, who is remanded in custody, was ordered to return to court on June 2 by Puisne Judge Norma Wade when a psychological report is due to be ready.

Spalding pleaded guilty to robbing John W. Swan Ltd. on Victoria Street of $6,000 on April 4, attempting to rob Elaina Wilson of Lindo's Market in Devonshire on June 1 and using a firearm during both of the incidents which occurred last year.

His lawyer, Mark Pettingill, requested a psychological report which Senior Crown Counsel Brian Calhoun did not object to.

Mr. Calhoun said he would deal with the remaining counts Spalding is charged with at the point of sentencing.

Spalding was captured with the help of a man after the attempted robbery at Lindo's on June 1. That man -- 35-year-old Eugene Eversley Jr. from Devonshire -- was hailed as a hero following the attempted robbery in which he was shot in the arm.

Following the attempted robbery, Lindo's Market managing director Georgio Zanol, said of Mr. Eversley: "He's a brave man. People in Bermuda are tired of this nonsense -- enough is enough.'' He added: "The good news is that everybody rallied together, and we got the guy.'' Spalding was brandishing a handgun when he entered the Watlington Road, Devonshire grocery shortly before 7 p.m. on June 1 and demanded money from one of the cashiers. However, "she was unable to give him the money,'' Mr. Zanol said.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette after the attempted robbery, Mr. Zanol said each cashier has a code which must be punched in to open each register, and Spalding must have placed his hand on the keypad, causing the word "error'' to appear on the cashier's screen.

The terrified woman would then have had to clear the incorrect entry and enter her own number before the register could be opened. "When you see somebody with a gun, and you see `error,' you know what kind of error it is,'' Mr.

Zanol said at the time.

In apparent frustration, Spalding then turned his attention on a customer and then he released several shots inside the supermarket. Nobody was struck by those shots.

He fled empty-handed toward his cycle, with a Lindo's manager and other staff members chasing him on foot.

It was then that the "would-be customer'' -- Mr. Eversley -- saw what was happening and joined in the chase. "The customer was the first person to catch up with the lone gunman. He tackled him and they fell to the ground. In the struggle...a shot was fired which struck (Mr. Eversley) in the upper right arm,'' a Police spokesperson said at the time.

Despite the wound, Mr. Eversley continued to hold onto Spalding as other Lindo's staff members came to his aid and made "a citizen's arrest'', detaining Spalding until Police arrived.

Then-Premier David Saul said of Spalding action: "The brave young Bermudian...may well, by his action, have prevented the loss of a life or lives.'' Spalding has been charged with ten counts relating to the attempted robbery of Lindo's which included attempting to murder Nikeisha Gibbons and Eugene Eversley Jr., possessing a .22 calibre handgun, attempting to rob Ms Gibbons and discharging several bullets from the handgun.

He was also charged with possessing 18 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition without a licence and demanding money from Ms Gibbons and Ms Wilson using threats of injury.

Spalding was also charged with using a camouflage scarf to hide his identity, using threats while committing a robbery and using the .22 calibre firearm with intent to resist his own arrest.

He was later charged with the robbery of John Swan Ltd., possessing a .22 calibre firearm without a licence and using it to rob, firing the gun, intending to commit a felony with a camouflaged mask and escaping on a stolen Peugot worth $3,200.

in connection with robbing the Crawl Hill Esso Service Station on May 11 and stealing more than $600, possessing a firearm without a licence, threatening injury to Sherri-Lynn Fubler, intending to rob with a camouflaged scarf, and stealing a Yamaha DT motorcycle worth $1,600.

Further counts include robbing William Pearman of Belvin's Grocery in Devonshire of $900 with the use of a machete on May 27, possessing a firearm without a licence, wearing a mask with a scarf, and stealing a Honda Scoopy worth $1,200 from Brian Raskin or receiving the stolen bike. And he was charged with robbing Ronald Donovan Davenport on January 7, possessing a firearm without a licence, possessing an offensive weapon -- a knife -- with intent to commit robbery, intending to commit robbery while wearing a cloth mask, demanding money with threat if Davenport did not comply, assaulting Davenport, and stealing a Motorola Radio worth $1,200 from Safeguard Services Ltd. and Davenport's cap worth $15.
