Plans to install solar panels at Bulls Head car park have been set back, according to one company applying for the project.Alternative Energy Systems (Bermuda) Ltd yesterday released their plans for the project, but said the Corporation of Hamilton has suspended its request for proposal.The reason for the suspension was reportedly so the city and Belco could continue talks regarding interconnection to the Belco grid and a purchase rate for electricity.AES CEO Tim Madeiros said: “AES is looking forward to the suspended RFP process proceeding again soon and welcomes the opportunity to bid fairly on the proposed project with all other interested parties.”The company had made a proposal for a 1.12MW solar array to the Corporation in May 2012, and the City sent out an official RFP in December, with a deadline of January 31, 2013.However, an AES spokesman said that the city notified respondents on January 25 that the RFP had been suspended.The company yesterday released it’s proposal, which would consist of a large solar array forming a roof on the parking lot’s upper level.The system would be capable of producing 1,652MWh of energy in the first year. AES said the system would be owned and operated by an investor consortium who would receive a return on investment through the sale of electricity to the city.The city would in turn receive long term fixed energy rates and shade on the upper level of the parking lot.The system would be supported with a steel structure that ties into the existing framework. The double array design would tilt to the south to offer added energy production and allow for rain run-off.AES would also incorporate the Island’s first electric car charging stations into the array for motorists who purchase electric cars and would like to recharge at the car park.Mr Madeiros said: “This project would represent a significant step toward Bermuda becoming environmentally sustainable. This has the opportunity to pass along the environmental and financial benefits of generating power from the sun to all of Bermuda.”“The project would also provide jobs at a time when many Bermudians are struggling financially. AES is an all-Bermudian owned and operated company and will only employ Bermudians during the course of the build, primarily those who are skilled in the construction and electrical trades.”
