City Hall will join with landmarks in more than 100 nations by going dark for one hour today as part of Earth Hour.In cooperation with environmental group Greenrock, the City of Hamilton will turn off all non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm in all of its buildings.Thousands of cities in 130 countries have pledged to take part in the exercise to celebrate taking action for our planet by working to conserve energy, with monuments such as Toronto’s CN Tower, San Fransisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and Rome’s Colosseum all going dark.Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling said that while traffic lights and essential street lighting will remain on for safety, lights at all City-owned buildings would be turned off.“We commit to go beyond the hour on Saturday night,” the Mayor said. “The City will look for ways to continue to reduce our power consumption around Hamilton.“I am calling upon, and encouraging, every resident and business owner in the City to participate in Earth Hour.“These actions, together with our individual, on-going commitment, will ultimately begin to make a difference in Bermuda and to our planet.”In celebration of the international event, the City will host a public gathering at City Hall from 7pm to 10pm, featuring fire spinners, limbo dancers, music and art.
