Bermuda gears up for the Queen's Birthday

ERROR RG P4 12.6.1997 Tuesday's Community story about the Queen's Birthday Holiday should have said that invited guests to the Government House garden party are on the precedence list, not the president's list. Queen's birthday awards are not announced at the parade but during the birthday weekend. The Queen's actual birthday is April 21. In addition, a Queen's Counsel does not obtain a medal.

June 16 will be filled with its annual display of `pomp and circumstance' as Bermuda celebrates the Queen's Birthday.

This will be a first in their new positions for the likes of Premier Pamela Gordon, His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Thorold Masefield, who was sworn in on June 4, and the Mayor of Hamilton the Rt. Wor. William Frith.

Even though this parade is very different from that of Bermuda Day -- no gombeys and floats or loud soca music, just band tunes -- spectators will still be excited to see family members and dignitaries taking their respective places in uniform and morning suits and hats, donning any special awards they may have received.

Normally hundreds of people come out.

According to spokesperson for the ceremonials committee, Valerie Pethen, the Island's celebration of the Queen's Birthday is normally held as close as possible to her actual birthday which is in May.

"There is a president's list of people to invite which include ex-Governors and past Colonels of the Regiment, and various community leaders and organisations sit in the VIP stands. The guards on parade are made up of the Regiment, Police, and Fire Services,'' Mrs. Pethen said.

She added: "During the parade the Queen's Honours and awards recipients are announced.'' They are mainly chosen for distinction and service to Bermuda.

"The Queen's Birthday is a public holiday and it is one of the few times when the dignitaries come out in their finery with hats and morning dress or lounge suits on Front Street.

"This is the biggest Hamilton parade of dignitaries. The Premier, Government and senior Cabinet people on the president's list occupy special seating under the flag pole and other invited guests sit on the bleachers along with families of those in the parade.'' Mrs. Pethen said following the parade, the Governor gives a garden party at Government House which is also in celebration of the Queen's Birthday.

"It is for invited guests and the list is extensive, with all kinds of people including charities. Hundreds of people attend and the Regiment band plays music. It is really a grand event which takes place from 11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.'' She added that any of the guests who attend the parade or party can wear their medals whether it is an MBE, QC etc. Any award from the Queen can be worn.

The parade will get underway just after 10 a.m. when the Bermuda Regiment march on parade and take their place on Front Street.

The parade marches on at 10.08 a.m. and will be in position by 10.15 a.m.

Dignitaries participating in the parade begin arriving at 10.20 a.m.

concluding with the arrival of the Governor and the Royal Salute is at 10.30 a.m.

Marching units on parade will include the Bermuda Regiment with Band and Corps of Drums, Bermuda Police Service, Bermuda Police Reserves, Bermuda Fire Service, Bermuda Cadet Corps and the Bermuda Sea Cadet Corps.

Visitors also enjoy the parade and in the past have commented on it being "full of tradition'' and something that "makes Bermuda very special''.

The parade is scheduled to last about 40 minutes. In the event of wet weather, a decision regarding the parade will be made at 9 a.m. and broadcast over the radio.

Those not attending the parade take advantage of the holiday in other ways, especially if the sun is shining.

Barbecues and picnics at the beach are very common and children take full advantage of the water.

On June 15 watch the power boat racing at 1 p.m. Ferry Reach St. George's.
