Bromby aims to cash in
(first race 9 a.m.) as firm favourite to lift the title and snatch one of two local qualifying spots up for grabs for this month's Omega Gold Cup match racing tournament.
Still riding the crest of his successful defence at the International One Design (IOD) World Championships two weeks ago, Bromby has an added advantage having Penny Simmons as a crew member. Simmons, third at the said regatta, certainly does not lack for credentials and with him added to a team also containing the likes of Dennis Correia and Lee White, Bromby looks a virtual shoo-in.
Thus it appears the battle will be for the second spot among the seven remaining boats and this shapes up as quite an interesting affair with Blythe Walker considered the head of a class that includes Olympian Paul Fisher, Adam Barboza, Jordy Walker, Martin Siese, Hugh Watlington and Scott Simmons. Walker made it through to the first round of the Omega Gold Cup last year and no doubt relishes the opportunity to compete once again.
"I think the field is of fairly widespread quality,'' said John Thompson, commodore of host club Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. "Everything would indicate that Bromby has a strong chance. Blythe Walker is another one, he's also on the world rankings' list.
"I very definitely expect some exciting races and if the weather stays like it is there will be lots of leaning over and plenty of water.'' The racing format will be that of a round-robin with each team racing each other at least once. A single point is awarded to the winner and the pair with the highest cumulative totals earn sponsorship from the bank for the purpose of participating in the Omega Gold Cup.
Previously those seeking a spot could pay their way in while the world's top ranked qualified automatically -- as they still do. Thompson expressed delight at the position taken by the bank.
"I think it's a great idea...something we in sailing circles would like to see and have foster. It is important that we have the opportunity to have representatives in the Gold Cup and it's a wonderful gesture by the bank to help get Bermudians involved and give them a boost.'' In fact the Bank of Bermuda has had a hand in promoting several sports functions lately, having earlier pledged funds to Bermuda's World Cup soccer campaign.
Said Cathy Frith, corporate and communications officer: "We're looked at as being a whole lot of cheque books and savings accounts, but being the largest organisation on the Island we feel it is our duty to become involved in cultural as well as sporting activities for the betterment of the whole community.'' Frith said the they harboured hopes of this becoming an annual occurrence and that its stature would grow accordingly.
Spectators wishing to view races from inland positions can find good vantage points along Harbour Road between Newstead and Salt Kettle Guest houses as well as in Hamilton at Albouys Point.
GOING FOR THE GOLD -- World IOD champion Peter Bromby is favourite to fly the Bermuda flag in this year's Omega Gold Cup.
