MPs pay tribute to former Warwick Academy head

Two ex-students were among the politicians who gave heartfelt tributes to former Warwick Academy headteacher Joseph (Zacky) Marshall.Dr Marshall died aged 83 after serving as Warwick Academy headteacher from 1972 until his retirement in 1987.Politicians told the House of Assembly they will fondly remember Dr Marshall, who transformed Warwick Academy from a typical British grammar school to one offering a more liberal arts education.Dr Marshall, who attended Warwick Academy himself, leaves behind wife Betty and children Shane, Tim, Chris and Kim.One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) MP Mark Pettingill struggled to hold back the tears as he said how proud he was to have been Warwick Academy’s head boy in 1982.He said: “I credit the influence, the kindness and the discipline of Dr Marshall for all the accomplishments in my life.“I named my eldest son Zachary in honour of Dr Marshall.”UBP MP Charlie Swan said he had been a student at Warwick Academy from 1968 to 1974 and Dr Marshall had been his headteacher for two years.He said: “Dr Marshall was a fine headteacher. He was respected and loved and also feared.”Mr Swan said he was one of just a handful of students who knew Dr Marshall used to be a boxer and he recalled how strict he was about school uniforms.PLP MP Randy Horton said: “He was an outstanding principal. He was a legend in the field of education.“He knew how to run a school. Just walking into Warwick Academy when he was in charge, you knew it was an orderly school.”UBP leader Kim Swan said Dr Marshall had “a profound impact” on those he met with his “love and affection” extending beyond his students.House Speaker Stanley Lowe said: “Having lived a good life, we know his legacy will continue in all the lives he touched.”OBA leader John Barritt said Dr Marshall offered direction and guidance to all, not just those who went to Warwick Academy.He said: “He was a strict disciplinarian, he said what he thought was right and he wasn’t afraid to stand up for it.“As a parent, he also practised what he taught and what he preached. He was a great family man.”Health Minister Zane DeSilva said he remembered Dr Marshall as an avid runner whom he “enjoyed some long runs with”.OBA MP Cole Simons described Dr Marshall as “a supreme educator of the Country who will be sadly missed by the people of this Country”.Environment Minister Walter Roban said Dr Marshall’s “reputation and notoriety is known to many”.
