Hood challenge fizzles out

Two goals in the last three minutes sealed St. George's passage to the second round of the FA Cup, although they will have to show greater determination and invention if they hope to progress further.

Colts required more than an hour to subdue a Robin Hood team which showed surprising punch in attack but serious deficiencies at the back.

The teams stood level for the first half hour.

In the 34th minute, a melee on the right found Greg Foggo wide open in the middle, 30 yards out. He stroked the ball past the oncoming 'keeper to break the deadlock.

But one goal was all St. George's had to show until the 65th minute, when Foggo, again in the thick of things, was brought down inside the box by the Hood's Colin McQueen.

Clay Smith fired the ball nonchalantly to the right of the Hood 'keeper, and the game was essentially over, bar the final scoreline.

Foggo then rounded out a busy afternoon by being booked for a completely unnecessary handball, and was soon replaced by Donald Whitfield.

Hood held out until six minutes from the end, when Dave Mason was injured and took to the sidelines holding his shoulder.

Their opponents reduced to ten men, St. George's took advantage mercilessly, with goals from close range by Dean Minors and, with a minute to play, from Clay Smith, adding his name to the scoresheet when he found himself free in an enormous expanse of space and placed the ball in the net.

St. David's 1 Vasco 3 It was a hard-earned victory for defending champions Vasco at St. David's yesterday in a game which had little to recommend it.

A dreary first half produced no goals but plenty of bookings.

The dismal affair was short on skill but long on commitment with the Second Division side determined to make their First Division rivals work for their place in the last eight.

And it was not until the 55th minute that Vasco were able to break the deadlock with Mark Ray prodding the ball home after a neat exchange with Sinclair Gibbons which left the home side's defence in disarray.

But St. David's were back on level terms just two minutes later when Derek Stapley was deemed to have brought down John Pitcher in the penalty area, and referee Stuart Crockwell pointed to the spot, to the disgust of the Vasco players.

The hard-working Keith Jennings made no mistake with his kick which left Keenan Tucker helpless and sent the home fans into a frenzy.

But there was to be little more for the St. David's supporters to cheer as a superbly-taken free kick by Earl Richardson curled over the wall into the top corner of Dale Fox's net in the 77th minute after Irving Burgess had been brought down on the edge of the area.

Richardson, who had come close to scoring several times in the first half, almost added another for Vasco shortly afterwards when he blasted the ball off the St. George's crossbar.

But Corey Hill made the game safe for the champions with seven minutes remaining.

A forgettable game ended with Vasco's Dwight Basden being sent off for retaliating after a tough tackle directly in front of the linesman.
