Chance to play with golf legend

Gary Player: Won nine major titles.

The son of legendary golfer Gary Player will be the host of this month's third annual 'Give Kids a Chance to Play for Free' tournament to be held at Belmont Hills . . . and one of those who competes will get chance to play with the legend himself.

An auction at the end of play will see competitors bid for a ticket which will allow them to play alongside the man who is regarded as one of the best golfers the game has ever seen.

Or, alternatively, they could travel to Player's ranch in South Africa where they will stay for a week.

During the team tournament, juniors will compete for prizes that will include much sought after items collected by Player during his five decades of participation in the Masters, which he won on three occasions.

Founder of the Player Foundation which promotes education for underprivileged children, 74-year-old Player won nine major titles.

His son, Wayne Player, also a golf pro, has been brought in by the Family Centre who organise the competition, which will also feature a clinic at the Bermuda Golf Academy in Southampton.

The idea of the two-day event is to introduce more youngsters to the sport, free of charge. The team tournament at Belmont Hills will be played on June 17 and will be preceded by the clinic on June 16.

Tokio Millenium are the major sponsors with several other local businesses also contributing.

Martha Dismont, executive director of the Family Centre, said the charity, formed in 1995, provides early intervention services to children who are suffering from family-based problems such as abuse, neglect, and other emotional challenges – run along similar lines to that of Player's Foundation.

"We are especially excited to announce that this year's golf tournament will kick off with a Youth Event on the 16th of June" said Dismont. "The youth event will be held at the Bermuda Golf Academy in Southampton and registration for young people ages five through 16 is free of charge."

Those interested in entering a team in the tournament or in having a child participate in the clinic should contact Liz Ward or Executive Choice Bermuda at 799-0631. Proceeds of the tournament will support Family Centre's services for children and families. Additional information can be obtained by calling the same number (799-0631).
