Douglas sings Island's praises in top flight American magazine
Bermuda has been plugged in a special edition of an airline's in-flight publication thanks to its association with an Academy Award winning actor.
American Airlines' "American Way'' magazine features Michael Douglas and Ariel Sands Beach Club on the cover of an edition entitled Celebrated Weekends.
Inside is a four page article devoted to the a weekend on "Michael Douglas' Bermuda'' by contributing editor Mark Seal.
The article holds the front spot in the magazine with 16 subsequent articles about weekends in Buenos Aires with Gabriela Sabatini, London with Helena Bonham Carter, New York with Alec Baldwin and St. Bart's with Claudia Schiffer plus others.
As might be expected, Ariel Sands -- which Mr. Douglas co-owns with his family -- is the only source of accommodation mentioned in the article.
A $5 million renovation of the 44-year-old, 50 room resort on 14 acres of land in Devonshire, which was aided by Mr. Douglas, has recently been completed.
The renovation project was driven by Mr. Douglas' mother Diana Dill Darrid -- who hails from the Dill family which can trace its roots in Bermuda to the 1630s -- his brother Joel and family members Seward Johnson and Elaine and Keith Wold.
Restaurants recommended by Mr. Douglas in the article include Dennis' Hideaway, Tom Moore's Tavern, the Frog and Onion Pub, Rock Island Coffee, Port O' Call, Little Venice and Caliban's -- at Ariel Sands.
For night life the actor suggests hitting Swizzle Inn for Rum Swizzles and Dark & Stormies or Chancery Wine Bar.
To fill the days, Mr. Douglas endorses visiting Dockyard, the Bermuda Maritime Museum and Somerset Bridge on the ferry, touring the Island's churches including Old Devonshire Church and St. Peter's Church or hiking around Palm Grove.
Speaking of exercise, the actor pumps Castle Harbour and Port Royal for golfers looking for action and dotes on the Bermuda Railway Trail for walkers and bikers.
For those looking to take to the water, he notes Bermuda is a yachting centre as well as offering diving, para-sailing, wind surfing, scuba diving and swimming -- especially at Church Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Elbow Beach and Cambridge Beach.
And the article also points out that Bermuda offers fine shopping, particularly for English items like silver and wool. Smith's on Front Street gets a mention, as do jewellers Astwood-Dickinson and Walker Christopher.
Mr. Douglas' cousin Ruth-Anne Outerbridge also gets a boost for the Bermuda Botanical Society Visitors Centre which she manages.
