Rabain is the only new Senator to take the oath
The reconvening of Senate saw one new member, Government Senator Diallo Rabain, take the oath of allegiance.Three of the four newly appointed members of the Upper House did not take part in the ceremony on Friday Government’s Junior Minister for Business Development, Vince Ingham, was overseas, while the necessary papers for One Bermuda Alliance appointees Toni Daniels and Michael Fahy were not ready.Mr Rabain, Junior Minister for Education, Youth and Sport, said he looked forward to bringing his experience into the Senate. The engineer and businessman has served on the Board of Education as well as the National Training Board. He replaces LaVerne Furbert.“I listened keenly to the initiatives put forward in the Throne Speech, especially in education,” Mr Rabain said. “One that stood out the most was getting teachers qualified to an overseas level, not just local.”Mr Ingham and the two OBA senators-elect may have to wait until the Senate resumes on November 23 to formally take the oath.Mr Fahy described the Throne Speech as “a sweetheart speech”. He noted mention was made in the Throne Speech of the CeaseFire anti-gang programme, an initiative he said was proposed initially by the OBA.“I didn’t hear anything on a Tourism Authority, which is something we support. Nor did I hear any reference to environmental planning law. As Shadow Minister for Environment, Infrastructure, Planning and Housing, I was listening for that. I heard no reference either to the provision of low-income housing. These are all issues that we’ll get into on [November 23].”Shadow Youth and Families Minister Ms Daniels said: “I found some initiatives encouraging. I didn’t feel they were enough. With the state the Country is in at the moment, we need radical reforms.”No orders of business were undertaken in the brief convening. A message of thanks will be sent to Governor Sir Richard Gozney for his speech.
