Cannonier still living like a Premier

Former Premier Craig Cannonier

Former Premier Craig Cannonier is expected to move out of the official Premier’s residence at the end of next month, more than three months after he resigned.

Government meanwhile have remain tight-lipped on whether Mr Cannonier has been paying a rent on the Clifton property.

Mr Cannonier, who stepped down in May in the wake of a string of Jetgate revelations, moved into Clifton after the OBA swept to power in December 2012.

The Devonshire MP has remained in residence since his resignation.

“Former Premier Craig Cannonier is currently residing at Clifton,” a Government spokeswoman said. “It is anticipated that his departure date will be by the end of September.”

The Royal Gazette asked the spokesperson if Mr Cannonier was paying a rent, but we did not receive a response to the query.

Mr Cannonier said he moved into Clifton at the beginning of 2013 so he did not waste an hour a day travelling between work and home in St George’s.

The Clifton property on Middle Road has not always been used by the Island’s Premiers.

Alex Scott did live in the traditional Bermuda home for the last few months of his tenure in 2006.

But Dr Ewart Brown chose to remain at his own property off Collector’s Hill in Smiths.

Traditionally the Clifton property was used to house the island’s Chief Justices, but it fell into a state of disrepair.

In 2006 it underwent a $1.5 million renovation project.

Government justified the cost by saying it would become the official residence of all future Premiers.

The house, which is more than 200 years old, has a living room, dining room, kitchen, several bedrooms and an office.

The grounds also include a two-bedroom guest house.
