Vastly expanding the number of homes to rent and buy is at the heart of the UBP's housing policy.

The party said Government could not expect the private sector to fill the affordable housing gap so the UBP has pledged to build 500 affordable homes for rent over the next five years.

And there is hope for those wanting to buy with plans to encourage private construction of homes costing no more than $350-450,000 through tax and other incentives.

New modular construction technology will be supported to help lower housing costs.

The party supports the construction of multiple-dwelling units and will liberalise height and density restrictions for special initiatives.

All Government property from St. George's to Somerset will be assessed to identify land appropriate for affordable housing.

The UBP pledges to work with financial institutions and developers to create innovative financing packages, including rent-to-buy schemes and reverse mortgages for seniors.

Shadow Finance Minister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin said: "When the PLP was elected in 1998, Bermuda had a housing problem.

"Today, after nine years of scandalous failure to act, Bermuda has a full-blown housing crisis.

"Recently, the emergency housing at Southside has been used as a dangling carrot — a roof in exchange for a vote.

"It is unacceptable to bribe the electorate. Nobody did you any favours.

"We stress that you vote your conscience — you owe the government nothing but your rent.

"The next United Bermuda Party government will build 500 affordable homes to rent within the next five years. Unlike the PLP, we will deliver."

And the party propose a variety of housing options for seniors including continuing care retirement communities which provide for health care services, transportation and other day-to-day needs.
