Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess has resigned from his position as Minister of Transport following reports of an altercation with another Cabinet member. In a statement released last night, Mr Burgess said that media reports about the events are embellished and "have very little resemblance as to what actually transpired," but had tendered his resignation because he did not want the matter to distract the public from the work being done."I will not allow anything to distract from our Party's effort to serve the people of Bermuda," Mr Burgess said. "I have offered, and the Premier has accepted, my resignation as the Minister of Transport."I remain committed to the people of Hamilton East, the ideals of the Progressive Labour Party and to the people of Bermuda. This Government continues to represent the best choice for improving the lives of Bermudians and I intend to continue doing my part in that important work."Mr Burgess first served in the Cabinet in 2006, acting as Labour and Home Affairs Minister under Premier Ewart Brown. He then served as Works and Engineering Minister for four years until Premier Cox moved him to the Ministry of Transport last November. It had been reported that on May 25, during a session of the House of Assembly, Mr Burgess and Government Estates Minister Michael Scott became involved in an angry physical confrontation in the lower house's kitchen area. The argument allegedly turned physical before the pair were separated by National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief.PLP sources told this newspaper that Mr Burgess was upset by suggestions by Mr Scott that he was planning to oust Premier Cox as party leader.
