UBP’s Swan demands equal time on CITV

Kim Swan is not happy about the way CITV operates.

UBP leader Kim Swan has said he will report CITV to the Broadcasting Commission over claims that opposition parties have not received equal time on the Government channel.Mr Swan said he was troubled by the station’s airing of a Government town hall meeting held in Warwick last week.“It is clear that the Government has an advantage over our opposition party and are able to use our taxpayer dollars to advance its political message,” said Mr Swan, adding that he enjoyed many of the station’s non-political programmes.“We in the United Bermuda Party demand equal time as the PLP Government use CITV to rebroadcast political town hall meetings.”Under the Broadcasting Commissioner’s Act which governs the content of all local TV channels, including CITV a station which airs a “government broadcast ... shall, within 14 days beginning with the day of the broadcast make available to the Opposition time to respond to that broadcast”. However, Broadcasting Commissioner Elizabeth Christopher would not comment yesterday on the status of the town hall broadcast because no complaint had been received.Meanwhile, Mr Swan’s concerns were echoed by the One Bermuda Alliance’s Trevor Moniz, who said CITV had not shown a “fair representation of the Opposition in their presentations”.The shadow Attorney General added that although CITV did cover the recent launch of the OBA, Opposition politicians were rarely featured on the station.“I’ve been on about this for some time, we’re being treated very badly by CITV,” he said.A Government spokeswoman issued a statement last night defending the station, claiming that the town hall broadcast was merely “the dissemination of Government information”.“It is in this vein that CITV endeavours to cover and air public meetings of the Government of Bermuda because they too are educational and informative,” the spokeswoman said.“The most recent Government meeting that was held on Tuesday July 19 at Warwick Workman’s Club focused on the economy which is an issue of national importance to all the people of Bermuda. It is incorrect to describe a Government-sponsored meeting as a party political event.”CITV was launched in 2007 by former Premier Ewart Brown, who said of the new station’s programming: “On this platform culture takes centre stage, not politics”.
