Blakeney signs for Islanders
unsettled Bailey's Bay batsman was considering a move to their Eastern Counties rivals.
The Royal Gazette disclosed weeks ago that Blakeney had trained with the club and had expressed interest in joining them for the 2000 season. Now it has emerged that the dashing batsman had followed through and signed for the club prior to last Friday's transfer deadline.
"He called me last Thursday and told me he was moving to St. David's,'' said Bailey's Bay captain Charlie Marshall yesterday.
"I wish him well and hope he has a great season. Glenn knows he's got a lot of potential but for the past three seasons with Bailey's Bay he hasn't completed a season with us. This is probably the best things that could happen for him.'' Blakeney stopped playing midway through last season when he and a few other members of the Bay team withdrew their services over what they saw as unfair selection policy for the Camel Cup final, which they lost to St. George's.
Blakeney's addition to the St. David's squad certainly would make the Islanders one of the teams to watch this season, once experienced batsmen Clay Smith and Allen Richardson return from suspensions.
They may have been the whipping boys in football this season, but teams certainly won't be allowed to take liberties with the St. David's cricket team this summer.
Along with youngsters Chris Foggo, Landro Minors and O.J. Pitcher, who recently represented the America's team in the Youth World Cup in Sri Lanka, St. David's have a well balanced team, one capable of improving on last year's fifth place in the league.
Transfer activity has been relatively quiet, with Jermaine Warner returning to Bailey's Bay from Willow Cuts. Warner came through Bay's youth programme years ago.
Two other players involved in last season's dispute with the club, brothers Ricky and Corey Hill, are reportedly back out training with the team who have picked up the services of former youth player Jermaine Warner from Willow Cuts.
Two other former Bay players attempting to resurrect their careers after several years are brothers Kurt and Derron Trott. Derron, a fast bowler, quit the game because of knee problems but is making an attempt to play again and has been training with the team.
Alan Wilkinson is understood to have moved to PHC from Warwick, while youngsters JaJa Millett and Don Vickers are leaving Devonshire Rec. for Western Stars.
