The joy of Year Six

Warwick Academy Rhodes House primary captains William Gray and Mya Gibbons

Warwick Academy has lots of amazing opportunities for children, from sports activities to art and drama, and the Year 6 students of Warwick Academy are enjoying being the oldest in the Primary School. They have been given the responsibility of different jobs which teach leadership and put them in to a position of responsibility. They also have lots of opportunities for fun.Warwick Academy is located on Middle Road in Warwick and is one of the oldest schools on the Island.Mrs Margaret McCorkell is head of the school and Mrs Maria Woods is head of the Primary Department. In Year 6 the children get the opportunity to go on a sking trip to Colorado for a week to learn how to ski or to improve their ability. This year the children can also take part in a dramatic piece for part of the Upper Primary production. One of the most sought-after positions in Year 6 is House Captain or Vice Captain. The Upper Primary has an election for each house: Rhodes (red), Morgan (yellow), Patton (green), and Robertson (blue). This is to see who the people in Year 4, 5 and 6 want as their House Captain. The candidates give a little speech to say why they should be the captain and then the children in that house vote. The person tallied the most votes is the captain and the one with the second most votes becomes the Vice Captain. The current captains and vice-captains are:Rhodes: Mya Gibbons and William Grey.Morgan: Malini Romeo and Samantha Soares.Patton: Abigail Jones and Isaiah Rickards.Robertson: Brady Cordeiro and Benjamin Barnett. The Year Sixes also have responsibility of being monitors and having little jobs to do.One popular job is handing out the pizza on Friday to the rest of the Primary students for the pizza lunch. They also have to walk a class up from the field to their classroom, showing the younger children how to behave. Another job is to monitor children in their classes if it is a wet recess. Also the Year Sixes help the Year Ones play on the tarmac area, looking after them and teaching them how to play.Watching and playing with the children is fun at recess and you get to really know a class well. “It is amazing to watch all the little children and see how we looked when we were little!” Jaida Steede said.“Year Six is fun and challenging. I enjoy it!” said Chinéa Augustus.Year Six is a mix of responsibility and freedom. It is truly amazing!
