Students have a surprise for CL
If it is before 9 a.m. when you read this story, keep it to yourself. The staff and students of Paget Primary don't want to ruin their surprise for their beloved custodian today - a special assembly honouring him.
Well-known for his pink station which is always adorned with ornaments reflective of the season, Calvin Leon Smith is the world's greatest custodian, according to school principal Wendell Smith.
If students are in need of a lift home, Mr. Smith - who calls himself CL -is sure to take them. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. According to Principal Smith, CL even brings lunch to school for the teachers.
"He said it's his way of giving back to the teachers," Principal Smith said. "He said when he was younger he was quite a handful."
Staff and students are honouring CL because they wanted to give him a special treat for his birthday on March 17, Principal Smith said. Among other activities, they intend to sing a song to him, recite poetry and present him with custom-made cards.
"This is a way of saying thank-you for all that he does," Principal Smith said."He's just somebody who doesn't worry about a job description. He's one who gives unconditionally and would anything for you."
Besides the assembly this morning, the school with also hold a birthday luncheon for CL on Monday and present him with several gifts.
"He is truly the greatest," Principal Smith said.
