Premier class shines through
Football fans at BAA Field had to blink twice last night to make sure Dandy Town were not playing Montserrat.
In an FA Cup quarter-final replay which they led 4-0 by the 19th minute, the city boys whipped St. George's 7-2 and sent them packing back to the East End.
Perhaps incensed by the fact that First Division opponents had held them off first time around, Devarr Boyles' team displayed an imperious, how-dare-they attitude from the start ? ruthlessly and repeatedly dissecting St. George's defence with ease and precision.
Veteran Carlos Smith opened the onslaught with a cool header in the second minute after a pinpoint cross by Seyoum Tuzo deep on the left wing.
Tuzo himself doubled the score in the 13th minute with a hard, low drive from a tight angle to the right of the goal and, in the 16th minute, it was 3-0 thanks to a Kingsley Mundy shot from point-blank territory.
Defender Randy Swan ? a real revelation this season ? contributed the fourth goal with a 19th-minute thunderbolt from 15 yards that still reached its destination despite being parried by St. George's custodian Troy Hall.
There was more pain and no gain for St. George's on the half-hour as diminutive striker Reggie Tucker Jr. was the beneficiary of another determined Tuzo run down the left flank and the former ably finished the move at the near post with his right foot.
At 5-0, Hall ? who hardly broke a sweat between the uprights for the national side versus Montserrat ? must have been appreciating what his opposite number on Sunday Kurt Joyce, experienced at the hands ? or more appropriately feet ? of Bermuda.
To their credit, St. George's pulled a goal back in the 36th minute as Dean Bailey turned smartly between two defenders and struck a sweet shot into the goal's roof from the edge of the area to make it 5-1 at the half.
Jared Peniston (67th minute) and substitute Lashun Dill ? who scored with his first touch (70 minutes) ? completed Town's tally while Detroy Smith registered St. George's second consolation goal in the 75th minute.
