Leaders Wolves can overcome loss of dynamic trio - Thomas

Wolves elder statesman Robert Thomas is confident his team can overcome the losses of key cogs Dane Simmons, Jason Davis and Jared Peniston.

Peniston is currently on crutches with a knee injury, striker Simmons has returned to studies abroad while national team player Davis is also due to return to school in the US early next week.

Simmons and Davis both played integral roles in Wolves' recent back-to-back victories over Dudley Eve champions Hamilton Parish. But with Peniston already sidelined, the pair's departures will leave the First Division club with two additional voids to fill.

Still, Thomas believes his team have the depth to continue their march towards what he hopes will be a return to top flight football next season after a six-year hiatus, without skipping a beat.

Wolves (23 points) are presently on top of the First Division by goal difference over fast fading Parish.

"Promotion is the main objective and so this is where our mindset and focus remain. Our goal is to take matters one game at a time and let the chips fall where they may. The guys have already been groomed for the challenge (promotion) while we are confident that we can get the job done whichever 16 we pick," he said.

Thomas added: "Whenever you are striving for promotion you must realise that you are trying to enter a tougher league. So we have prepared ourselves and I'm sure in the end we are going to achieve our goals this season."

Wolves are away to unpredictable St.George's Colts - who held fellow league title contenders Somerset Eagles to a scoreless draw last weekend - on Sunday. And the Devonshire club will take to the spacious Wellington Oval pitch with confidence at a season-high having ruthlessly picked apart Hot Peppers 3-0 and 4-0 in the space of 48 hours in their previous two outings.

"We let our intentions be known and have shown others just where we are at," Thomas declared. "And what better way to serve notice of our intentions by defeating a previously unbeaten Hamilton Parish twice, going one goal better the second time around."

Yet despite the uplifting results, Thomas has urged his team-mates to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground.

"We are confident we can achieve our goals this season if we keep focused and take things one game at a time. But obviously we also realise the league is not over yet," he said.

Wolves have stepped their game up a notch or two since the Christmas break, with the influential Vince Minors Jr returning to peak form at BAA Field last Tuesday night where he bagged a hat-trick to put an end to a lean spell in front of the uprights.

"VJ (Minors) was long overdue for a big game and what a way to break out of a slump," Thomas said. "That was awesome and hopefully he can continue in the same vein for the remainder of the season."
