Cost savings as Consumer Affairs moves
Consumer Affairs has a new location, after merging with the Rent Commission in a move expected to save Government $320,000 a year.
As of yesterday, Consumer Affairs was situated on the third floor of the D. Rego Building at 75 Reid Street. It was formerly located in Front Street’s Ingham and Wilkinson Building.
The relocation made good on a Spending and Government Efficiency (SAGE) Commission recommendation, according to Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy.
Two senior officials in the Rent Commissioner’s Office — the Director and the Assistant Rent Commissioner — are due to retire in August and September of this year, leading Government to eliminate the positions. The three remaining officers are to be either retrained by Consumer Affairs, or transferred to other Government Departments.
With the elimination of annual salaries totalling $138,145 and $95,503 respectively, plus the yearly rent of $87,000, Government should save $320,650 as a result, Senator Fahy said.
