Willow Cuts will be looking to put an end to their jinx against St David’s when the two unbeaten Premier Division teams lock horns in tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash at Lord’s.

St David’s have had their opponents’ number in recent years, a trend that Cuts stalwart Dexter Basden would like to see come to an end this weekend.

“We definitely owe St David’s one,” Basden said.

The Islanders won the first meeting this season in last month’s Belco Cup final at Lord’s.

“St David’s have beaten us in the Belco Cup for the last three years,” Basden added.

“Every time we get St David’s they knock us out.

“St David’s also beat us in the Lindo’s Twenty20 final last season and maybe two years before then they beat us in the same final at the National Sports Centre. I think we have only beaten them once in the last six tries, but I think it’s going to be our turn this time.”

With so much at stake in terms of league supremacy, Basden expects both teams to leave it all on the pitch.

“There is no doubt about it, it is definitely going to be a tough battle,” the former Cuts captain said. “It is going to come down to which team shows up on the day, and I am pretty sure everyone is well pumped up to take St David’s.”

Wendell Smith, the St David’s coach, said: “Both teams are undefeated in the league and obviously it is a much anticipated match.

“You have Willow Cuts who have probably the best batting line-up in Bermuda playing against St David’s, who have the best bowling line-up.”

Cuts will certainly have their work cut out against the defending champions, whose line-up boasts depth in batting and variety in the bowling department.

The Islanders’ line-up could also include Kevin Hurdle, the former Bermuda seam bowler, who has joined the club on a late transfer from Flatts.

“Hurdle brings some experience and can bowl and make some runs, so he is going to be a bonus for them,” Basden said. “But I think the main thorn in our side has been George O’Brien Jr, who knows how we play having played for us for the last three years. If we can overcome George, we can handle the rest.”

Cuts have also been bolstered the late transfer of former Somerset Cup Match all-rounder Dean Stephens from Somerset Bridge.

Sunday’s remaining Premier Division matches will involve Somerset hosting St George’s at Somerset Cricket Club, while Cleveland County take on Southampton Rangers at Wellington Oval. Bailey’s Bay have a bye.

In First Division action, Warwick play Flatts at Southampton Oval, while PHC face Devonshire Rec at PHC Stadium.
