PHC pounce as battling BAA run out of steam

Commercial League BAA Wanderers put up a brave performance,

Commercial League BAA Wanderers put up a brave performance, making their Premier Division opponents sweat it out for 53 minutes before the bottom fell out of their game early in the second half of this FA Cup first round clash at Somerset yesterday.

Ironically it was the man who had held the rampaging Zebras at bay, goalkeeper Paul Nicholson, who made the blunder which eventually opened the floodgates.

Nicholson punched away a shot from Stephen Astwood when he could have gathered it with his hands and Kenny Mills gratefully collected the clearance to fire home. That 1-0 lead sent PHC on their merry way with BAA managing only to collect a consolation goal a minute from time through Norman Bradford -- the striker taking advantage of a mix-up between full back Corey Dowling and substitute goalkeeper Dennis Joel.

Although the end result was convincing, Wanderers can take credit for a first half display which created all sorts of problems for their opponents, big centre-backs Brian Crook and Darren Hope continually frustrating the PHC forwards.

After 39 minutes, the Zebras had their best chance when Andre Washington hit the post from an angle and then Astwood followed up by putting another shot wide before midfielder Steve Black cleared off the Wanderers' goal-line.

After just 40 seconds of the second half, Nicholson showed his agility by diving to block Astwood from point-blank range, but Mills broke the ice after 53 minutes and the Zebras were then able to take a decisive edge. Chris Furbert made it 2-0 after 71 minutes, substitute Duval Wilson got the third a minute later and another substitute Julian Caisey added the fourth after 75 minutes.

The Zebras went ahead 5-0 after 85 minutes when Raynel Lightbourne scored from the spot after he was fouled by Crook.

Rangers 0 Dev.Colts 1 An 82nd minute thunderbolt from the left boot of Jermaine Belboda put Devonshire Colts through to the next round of the cup, while denying upstart Ireland Rangers.

It was never easy for Colts, who came into the tie heavily favoured, but played anything like a side considered among the Island's elite.

Missing the inspirational presence of captain and centre-back Shannon Burgess, who was off the Island, Colts were in constant disarray. Rangers contributed to the frustration of the visitors, showing all the grit and determination needed to spring an upset.

And while Colts dominated most of the possession and tripled Rangers in terms of shots on goal, they were never able to sap the spirit of the west enders, who ran hard to the end.

In fact, extra-time appeared more and more a certainty until Belboda stepped to the fore minutes from time. A left wing corner by Aljame Zuill was only partially cleared by defender Sean Symons to Belboda, lurking at the edge of the penalty area. And seizing the opportunity he unleashed a tracer into the crowded goalmouth, the ball taking a slight deflection, leaving goalkeeper Ricardo Tucker helplessly flailing at air.

T.Dogs 6 Vasco Mariners 0 Old scores were settled in this one-sided Portuguese derby with Tuff Dogs proving a point to a side they blamed for shutting out budding talent.

It took the home side just three minutes to find the net when Mariners coach and goalkeeper Dennis Rodrigues misjudged Joe Carola's half-volley which bounced under his arms.

And Rodrigues was again the villain 12 minutes later when he was red-carded after he rugby tackled Paulo Franco who had burst past him. Robert Margues's neatly struck spot kick beat substitute goalkeeper David Chambrey.

Tuff Dogs midfield gave their forwards plenty of ammunition as they poured forward and kept the Mariners back line under constant pressure.

Kevin Mooney burst down the right flank and his firmly struck cross was netted on the volley by Joe Carola after half an hour. Three minutes later Nathan Brown dribbled down the flank and then pulled the trigger from close range.

His celebration had the crowd laughing as he revealed a T-shirt which said: "I am not Portuguese.'' Mooney could have had a second when he rounded the keeper late in the first half only to strike a fierce shot which pinged the post.

The restart saw Tuff Dogs still full of bite as Mooney netted from a goalmouth melee after just two minutes.

But Mariners deserve credit for upping their game shortly after with a 10-minute spell of sustained pressure which saw Dennis Pimental's sharp turn and volley well saved by Danny Faria.

Tuff Dogs were soon straining at the leash and they could have netted many more before Nelson Almeida's far post header made it six.

Tuff Dogs manager Miguel DaPonte credited Mariners for making a game of it in the second half. But he said many of his side had left Mariners to join Tuff Dogs after finding first team opportunities limited.

And his opposition Dennis Rodrigues admitted their had been bad blood between the two sides after accusing Tuff Dogs of poaching players.

He said: "Tuff Dogs have been psyching themselves up for a couple of years for this. Now we will have to see what happens in the league.'' St. George's All-Stars 1 Pest Control 0 A squandered penalty in the dying seconds of this tie stopped Pest Control forcing extra-time.

But in truth James Braithwaite's miss ensured St. George's got their just reward after having the better of this clash between two Commercial League teams.

It was Charles Wade's close range strike from a Terrance Carlington cross just two minutes into the second half which booked the home side a place in the second round.

And the front pair were a lively combination -- being at the heart of most of their sides' best moves during a more even second half which saw few clear cut chances.

A long ball found Carlington in yards of space in the 80th minute but he dithered and allowed the defence to re-group.

And Wade was unlucky when his long range shot struck from a sharp angle was just a couple of feet out with the keeper stranded.

As the seconds ticked out Andrew Richard's challenge on a Pest Control striker led to a rather harsh penalty decision, with many in the crowd noting the defender had emerged with the ball.

But the spot kick was side footed wide ensuring St. George's a place in the next round.
