DRIVERS WILL HAVE TO PAY TO PARK GVT Drivers will soon have to start paying to use two city car parks.

Bulls Head car park and the parking lot between Dundonald Street and Elliott Street, next to Gosling's warehouse, will have pay and display machines.

But charges are expected to be as low as a dollar a day.

Hamilton Corporation secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt said: "Once the installation of the machines has been completed -- in approximately four to six weeks -- the Corporation will be charging a fee for parking in both of these car parks, but it likely to be less than in any of the other fee-paying car parks.

"Both are used almost exclusively for all-day parking, and there will likely be a flat fee of a dollar a day.'' POST OFFICE RELEASES STAMPS UPS The Post Office's philatelic team celebrated Hamilton's 200th anniversary last week by releasing four new stamps.

Collected under a first day cover of five dollars, three of the stamps depict Hamilton of the past and one shows the city as it is today.

The present-day Hamilton stamp was produced by Bermudian architect, interior designer and painter Mr. Royce Baxter.

Mr. Baxter, who is known worldwide for his work on film scenery in movies like "Alien'' and "1984'', said he designed the Hamilton stamp in July this year while doing a painting of elephants near Kilimanjaro.

Prosecuting, Insp. Peter Duffy told the court that Anthony E. Thomas of Loyal Hill Road was seen by Police on Elliott Street in Hamilton.

"At 10.20 p.m. on May 23 Police went to the location after receiving information,'' Insp. Duffy said. "They saw a group of men standing in an alley off the street and saw a transaction being made between two males.

"When Police approached the two, Thomas tried to run away but was caught by the officers.'' Insp. Duffy said Police found an envelope in Thomas' left trouser pocket which contained 0.63 grams of cannabis.

WAGE DECISION DUE THIS WEEK HOS Close to 400 hospital workers expect to learn this week if they will receive more than a $5 wage increase.

That was the final offer made by the Bermuda Hospitals Board when talks over a new two-year contract broke down earlier this year.

The old contract, between the board and unionised workers at King Edward VII Memorial and St. Brendan's hospitals expired on October 5, last year.

But after 14 meetings the two sides were not able to reach an agreement over wages.

A mediator from the Labour Relations office became involved in May, but the two sides still could not agree.

Arbitrator Mr. William Hobgood was recently called in. And the two sides met with him and assessors Mr. Milton Scott and Mr. Louis Grant last week.

Hospitals' Board executive director Mr. Hume Martin said the Board's final offer was $5 in the first year and $4 in the second.

The union was asking for a $35 increase for both years.

But it is understood that the union has lowered its request to just over $20 for each year.
