Though they are packing up and moving out, the US Naval Air Station will leave some things behind.

Robert B. Chaffee School is on the top of Base commander Capt. Timothy Bryan's list.

"We have made a commitment to the Government, because I would like to see the school stay out there,'' Capt. Bryan told the Bermuda Insurance Institute's bimonthly meeting on Wednesday at the Princess Hotel.

"It is an excellent school and it is well equipped. It makes no sense to pack up the equipment and take it back to the US where it would sit in a warehouse.

"The school is ready for business. It just needs students and teachers.'' Capt. Bryan said buildings in Bermuda's climate do not last long if they are not used and he hoped Bermudians would make use of it.

"We are just beginning the process that will end this unique era of Bermudian, British and American cooperation that began 50 years and two war victories ago.

"Working with the Government, we at the Base are committed to a delivered transition, one which has, as its foundation, the trust, and openness which has characterised our relationship in the past decades.

"Our fundamental objectives are first and foremost, is the safe and efficient turnover of airfield operations which includes air traffic control, crash fire and rescue service, ground electronics and everything else that goes into operating an airport which is a significant amount of things.

"It is our absolute commitment that that turnover will be done safely and effectively and seemlessly because that is what we are after.

"It is our hope that the measure of our effectiveness would be for any commercial airline pilot to fly into that Airport the day after we've left in September 1995 and notice absolutely no difference in the quality and safety of the arrival and later departure.'' He added that the second goal of the Base was the orderly withdrawal of personnel and equipment.

"In the same time we don't want to take certain things that are best left behind where they would be more appreciated.''
