Dedicated hospital workers win recognition

Psychiatrist Dr. Donald MacKenzie and nurse, Janet Glasgow are the joint winners of this year's Hospital Employee of the Year.

Dr. MacKenzie is a consultant psychiatrist at St. Brendan's Hospital in Devonshire and Ms Glasgow is a registered nurse at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Ms Glasgow loves nursing and has given 28 years of loyal service to the hospital after joining in 1973.

She is not only a registered nurse, but also works at Agape House and is an evening/night co-ordinator.

Ms Glasgow also founded the sexual assault response team which deals with sexual assault victims in a private and sensitive setting and manner.

Ms Glasgow said that one of the most satisfying aspects of her job is to nurse Agape House patients back to health so that they can go home, even if it is for a brief time.

She said the most challenging aspect of her job was being there sometimes just holding a client as they pass away.

The selection committee said: "It was very much evident when she told the committee that she put her heart and soul into nursing.'' Dr. MacKenzie impressed the committee not only with the work he has done on outcome measurements at St. Brendan's Hospital and Turning Point, but also in his commitment to training others by recording teaching packs and presentations available on loan to all staff.

The selection committee said they got the sense that Dr. MacKenzie's second career choice was that of a professor and they said: "As an institution we are forever grateful because its good when somebody comes to work and does their job for a day, but when a teacher comes to work the learning is everlasting.'' As employees of the year, the two winners will have their portrait placed in the lobbies of the hospitals and they will also receive a framed certificate of their award.

Always promoting education, the winners will also receive an Educational Committee Bursary of $1,000 and five days paid leave to attend an overseas educational conference or programme of their choice.

They will also receive dinner for two, an inscribed gift of Waterford crystal and a trip to London, UK on British Airways.
