Runners in May 24 race are helping New Beginnings
Seven runners will go the distance for the May 24 Half-Marathon in support of The Royal Gazette’s New Beginnings $1 Million Campaign.Their sponsorship dollars will help Bermuda’s young people stay on a steady course, by assisting the Mirrors programme and funding educational grants for at-risk youth.Team member Rebecca Davis said: “I noticed all the stories in the paper, and when I was asked to run, I thought I’d challenge myself, the same way these young people are challenging themselves to go further.”YouthNet mentoring volunteer Rebekah Lazarou joined up after going through the fitness programme the 100-Day Challenge.“I’m just keeping that going forward for a good cause,” she said. Many runners were courted by New Beginnings Education Trust founder Kerry Judd. A dedicated Mirrors volunteer, Ms Judd created the trust to assist young people who have rediscovered their desire for an education.Runner Claire Nicholls “jumped at the chance” when contacted.“This means that I get to participate in the run while helping a really good cause such as New Beginnings,” she told The Royal Gazette. “I think it’s really important to support young people who want to get their life on track and give them the resources they need to succeed.”Aprille Choudhury-DeShield and Nalton Brangman, both veterans of the May 24 race, were happy to join in, along with runners Craig Bridgewater and Jennifer Calko.Pledge forms to support them are available from Aardvark Communications Limited, as well as the offices of the Mirrors Programme in Global House on Church Street.
