Alarm over Saltus wall crack

Residents are alarmed about a large vertical crack running down a boundary wall at Saltus Grammar School on St. John's Road. They contacted The Royal Gazette with concerns about Saltus's apparent lack of action.

Action has been taken, however, both on behalf of Government and the school, with Saltus assuring the problem will be solved as soon as possible.

"We were alerted to the problem not directly but indirectly," said Saltus director of development Daniel Blagg. He explained that the school was unaware of the crack until it was reported on the hotline set up by Works & Engineering after the collapse of the wall at the Bermuda College last month which claimed the life of teacher Andrea Trott Bicari.

The crack was also reported in a tip to local electronic media reported on February 25, however The Royal Gazette understands the school itself was never approached directly by anyone concerned about the state of the wall.

When it was reported on the Works & Engineering hotline, the department alerted Saltus to the problem and examined the wall. Saltus also hired a private contractor who examined the wall on Monday afternoon. And by Wednesday afternoon the entire cracked section of the wall had been removed, dirt and all. "It's not dangerous now at all," said Mr. Blagg on Wednesday.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette on Monday night, Mr. Blagg said he was not sure of the exact route that would be taken to finish repairing the wall, but wanted to assure the public it would be solved quickly. "We have to do it the right way," he said. "But we are going to fix the problem as soon as possible."
