Under-19 trio make lacrosse indoor league <t$>debut

LAST week’s lacrosse action saw three of Bermuda’s Under-19 squad make their debut in the indoor league as James Chiappa, Jeff Endo and John Buchanan teamed up with the Northrox and Bones Brigade All Stars to showcase their talent that will be taken to Canada in 2008.The Northrox gave the Hammerheads a sound thrashing in game 1 by a score of 21-9. Veteran Ernie Theriault gave the rookies a lesson on their spring break by scoring 12 goals in his trademark flashy style.

Chiappa and Endo chipped in with one each. Goalie Andy Soucie had 20 saves in the win. The scoring duo of Barry Lohan and James Robinson had five for the Hammerheads, with Remy Colmet, Pete Rodday and Ryan Mather adding one apiece.

In second prime-time match-up, the Money Shots sent the Bones Brigade All Star unit packing with 20 goals to the M*A*S*H unit’s 8.

The Brigade paid dearly without their captain and the Money Shots took advantage by using their skill to pull out all stops in the second half.

Soucie and Steve Michel combined for 13 goals while Kirk Bridgewater was in a no-nonsense mood as the Money Shot’s ‘enforcer’ by adding to his league-leading penalty minutes. Theriault had 24 saves in the win.

The Bermuda Lacrosse Association (BLA) is looking for interested students to form a team to participate in the ILF Under-19 Championships to be held in British Columbia, Canada, in July of next year.

All skill levels from beginner to varsity are welcome.

The sport of lacrosse can offer students many opportunities including world-wide tours and scholarships to universities throughout Canada and the US.

For those who have missed previous match-ups, you can catch all the indoor lacrosse action at the Saltus Grammar School gym in Pembroke on Thursday nights starting at 8 p.m. Admission is free and entertainment is guaranteed!

The BLA has long been committed to promoting diversity through sport. It offers a wide range of programmes from youth to adult. Lacrosse is one of the world’s fastest growing sports and Bermuda is quickly making a name in the international arena.
