June 22, 2011Dear Sir,Congratulations to Michael Fahy who has questioned the financial affairs of the BIU. I have always found it amazing that intelligent Bermudians blindly pay dues to the union, and no one seems to know where the money goes. Well, now we know. $1.47 million goes in annual salaries to five department heads; no wonder there is never any money for workers who lose their jobs and need financial help. It is also interesting to discover that despite four accountant administrators the BIU has been unable to comply with its reporting obligations. Surely it is time that the working man (and woman) saw the light, and stopped giving their hard earned money to this consortium.The latest ploy is for the BIU to threaten industrial action, at a time when we desperately need cooperation on all fronts in the transport business. Tourism is now more dependant on cruise ship arrivals than anything else, and we cannot afford to let the unions destroy our reputation with the shipping lines by calling strikes, something they did famously in the past, and from which we are only just recovering. The last thing to cut is the ferry and bus time tables.The solution is simple. If drivers do not want to drive at night or on holidays, employ drivers who will. There are so many unemployed Bermudians at the moment that this should be no problem. We cannot afford to be in the grip of the BIU, and in this day and age unions are redundant. Unions make it extremely difficult for employers to dismiss incompetent staff, and this is not good for business. It would have been a good idea, at a time like this, if our Premier and Minister of Finance had increased the cash flow of the public transport system, instead of increasing the salaries of civil servants.PISCESPaget
