Businesswoman lays down a challenge for charity

A tasty way to give back; Cupcake creator Malisa Swan holds up one of her creations at the New Beginnings office in the City of Hamilton on Wednesday she plans to donate proceeds to the charity through a cupcake bake off competition.

Hard-working baker Malisa Swan needs no excuse to make her speciality cupcakes, but after three years in the business she’s using her skills to give back.Announcing her support for the New Beginnings $1 Million Campaign, Ms Swan asked: “How often do you have the chance to eat cupcakes, and say it’s for charity?”The campaign is in aid of the Mirrors programme — and for education grants for the Island’s at-risk youth, through the New Beginnings Education Trust.“All young people deserve opportunities,” said Ms Swan.“But many who are entering adulthood lack the resources, the nurturing and the access to become contributing members in our community.”Graduates of Mirrors and other personal transformation programmes often don’t get access to scholarships when they decide to go back to their education.“I have two children of my own,” explained Ms Swan. “One day they might need access to a grant — not only them, but anybody in my community. You never know what can happen.”Her Mother’s Treats Gourmet Cupcakes have proven a hit, especially with office groups, and Ms Swan said she’d been looking for a cause to partner with. Now, for the rest of the year, half her proceeds will go toward the campaign, which was launched in April by The Royal Gazette and the New Beginnings Education Trust.Ms Swan calls her personal contribution Cakes for a Cause.“If it works out well, I’ll just keep going for as long as it takes,” she said.“I’m hoping the next person with a business going will come up with their own fund raiser. You could have ‘Hairdos for a Cause’.”Ms Swan said she’d been inspired after reading in The Royal Gazette about Ally Bolton and Jevon Roberts, whose wedding today will include a contribution to the $1 Million Campaign. Her licensed home business sprang in part from childhood memories of “watching my nana bake at home, and licking batter from the spoon”, she recalled.Ms Swan also plans to launch a cupcake challenge in November, for other licensed bakers to showcase their talents.“With Hallowe’en coming up, I’ve been thinking about toppings for cupcakes even more than usual,” she said. The cakes, available for $30 a dozen, can be ordered via info@motherstreats.com.According to New Beginnings founder Kerry Judd, Ms Swan has also asked to join the charity’s fundraising committee.“Each person coming forward with an idea is motivating someone else to come up with their own,” Ms Judd said. “We’re getting there.”
