A new winner of the Belco Cup will be crowned next weekend in the absence of perennial holders, and last year’s winners, Southampton Rangers.Rangers, who where awarded the trophy for good following their fifth consecutive victory in 2009, failed to qualify for competition, having only just avoided relegation last summer.Competing in next Saturday’s semi-finals will be the four top teams from the 2011 season: St David’s, Willow Cuts, Bailey’s Bay and Devonshire Rec.St David’s will square off with Cuts at Lords, while Bay take on Belco Cup newcomers Devonshire Rec. at Somerset Cricket Club.The winners of both games will compete for the tenth annual Belco Cup title the following day at Lords. Play starts at 11am each day.Each year, the Bermuda Cricket Board, BELCO, Somerset Cricket Club and St Davids Cricket Club team up to donate proceeds from the final to a charity.This year the BCB Pee Wee Cricket Programme has been chosen as the recipient of all entry fees and any additional donations that fans may wish to make.The Pee Wee Programme is the foundation of the BCB Youth Development Programme, which introduces the game of cricket in a fun, structured and safe environment.The aim of the youth programme is to provide a clear pathway for players to progress from the age of five through to the senior level diverting Bermuda’s at risk-youth from crime and anti-social behaviour through the sport.President of the Umpires Association, Walisford Manders, said the match umpires would also be donating their fee to the Pee Wee Programme.Nadine Browne-Evans, secretary of Devonshire Recreation Club, said they were excited to be making their first appearance in the tournament.“The Devonshire Recreation Club is very proud of the accomplishments of our dedicated team, seasoned coach and supportive fans. We are excited to be involved in this showcase event,” she said.“Devonshire Recreation Club has a rich tradition of outstanding cricket and true passion for the sport. I am certain our club community will be out in force to support our players in what promises to be brilliant cricket matches on May 19 and 20.”
