The Beautiful Gift of Cedar
There is nothing like a Bermuda cedar gift to give to someone you love for Christmas. And at Bermuda Stripping & Refinishing there is a wide variety of cedar gifts available right from the large ones like dining tables and chests to the smaller ones like jewellery boxes and small table lamps.“We are also thinking about making desk pen holders we are hoping to bring them back as they are the ideal gift for the executive. Then of course we have the bigger items,” said Anthony Madeiros, the Marketing Manager/Foreman at BS&R.“We have a number of smaller items smaller cedar things for holiday gifts. We have a small cedar chest and one of the newer items we have is the small table lamps which we have redesigned. We also have standing lamps which are always very popular and we have things like coffee tables,” he said. However it is not just making beautiful cedar furniture and the like that BS&R specialise in they are also masters when it comes to refinishing the fixing older wooden furniture that perhaps has been laying around the house and in need of repair and finishing.“We target the bigger items for refinishing like dining rooms sets but we will do any piece of furniture. Some people have big sentimental pieces they want redone.”And if those big ticket items have something structurally wrong with them then BS&R can also fix that.“We have three companies here (under one roof). We have the stripping and refinishing part, the custom carpentry part and also the antique restoration. We can redo the whole inside of your house and maintain it. We will get your house nice looking for Christmas if you have a lot of wooden pieces and we also do metal works as well like shutters and repair and build old doors.”Some of the wooden doors at the company’s operation on Middle Road in Devonshire are beautiful. And Mr Madeiros said that many people in Bermuda may have hidden gems that they don’t know about.Often, he said, in the past people would simply paint over wooden doors and the like since the upkeep was easier. “That was when Bermuda cedar was plentiful unlike now,” he explained. “It was not unusual to see people paint over cedar because cedar was common now it is hard to get hold of. I imagine that a number of people don’t realise what is underneath that paint especially doors. It is a pleasant surprise when you think you have a $50 door and then find out you have a $2,000 door!”Mr Madeiros said they pride themselves on bringing antiques back to life using intensive hand techniques which employ natural oils, waxes, stains and polishes.Their T-Made Custom Carpentry uses the finest lumber available and often that is Bermuda cedar, mahogany, Western red cedar and antique heart pine.Noting that many people get their roofs and outside work done at their homes in the summer, Mr Madeiros said: “This is our time now, the inside of homes.”
