Promotion tips Rangers hammer Parish in opener
Promotion favourites Southampton Rangers sent out an early warning to the rest of the division with this easy victory at Wellington Oval.
Rangers, returning to the Second Division after just one season back in the top flight, led 3-1 at the half on goals from Neville Grant, Herbert Dillas and Jason Raynor.
Raynor also grabbed a second from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after he had been brought down by goalkeeper David Trott who was ejected by referee Richard Knight for the professional foul.
Substitute Corey Broadbelt finished off the scoring for Rangers while Ernest Lathan hit Parish's lone goal in the first half.
Somerset Eagles 1 St.David's 1 Former Boulevard coaching tandem Andrew Bascome and Gary Mallory shared the honours as their respective new teams drew 1-1 in this Second Division opener at White Hill Field yesterday.
Mallory's Eagles took the lead in the 11th minute when Mike Williams -- who at 43 is still playing at an age when most players have hung up their Commercial League boots -- volleyed home skipper Jerome Richards' cross from 12 yards.
Bascome's St. David's, who looked the more enterprising of the two sides, levelled in the 53rd minute when Shane Weeks crashed the ball home off the underside of the bar after Rudell Pitcher's shot had been blocked. Weeks' strike completed a sweeping move started deep in St David's territory by Patrick White who stretched the Eagles defence with a long pass out to left winger Otis Minors who then centred for Pitcher.
Port Royal 1, Paget 2 Paget shook off an early goal to triumph against Port Royal in this Second Division clash yesterday at Frog Lane.
Port Royal's 10th minute strike came from David Gibbs, but was cancelled out 33 minutes later by Onslow Lightbourne.
Ivan Trott netted another in the 55th minute to wrap up Paget's victory.
Prospect 3, Wolves 0 Prospect opened their season account with a bashing of a nine-man Wolves outfit at Prospect field.
Goals from Kenneth Bartrum (20th minute), D.Johnson (73rd minute) and Andrew Rollins (82nd) was more than enough to see off a humble challenge from the visitors.
